For best results, the treatment of hare-lip and cleft palate needs well-coordinated teamwork. Clinical aspects and therapeutic criteria developed over many years of collaboration between the first odontoiatric clinic and the department of plastic surgery are described. In these anomalies of the middle third of the facial bones, early bone surgery is recommended. Each case will need prolonged treatment. Intensive active therapy alternates with periods of observation according to serial craniometry and surgical indications. A case of marked maxillary hypoplasia and severe cross-bite is described and its treatment program discussed. Once again the importance of early orthopaedic repair is stressed for maxillary facial development, cosmetic effect, function and social rehabilitation of the young patient.
