Introduction: in these last years the studies regarding the adhesion of diffe- rent adhesives systems are becoming more and more important. To obtain the adhesion with a fluid adhesive, it is necessary that it enters in contact with the substratum or it is able to stretch in a thin film and to “wet” the surface of the adhering, that is enamel and den- tin. This quality is important to activa- te the chemical or electrostatic bonds and to allow the molecules involved to approach to the distance of some Ang- ström. It can be efficaciously measured from contact’s angle of a drop of fluid on the adhering surface. If the con- tact’s angle is smaller than the con- tact’s angles of others adhesives (near to 0 degrees), this capacity is greater than other adhesives. We have evalued experimentally the capacity of adhe- sion of five different adhesives systems by measuring wettability angles. Materials and methods: we have used five different adhesives systems: G- Bond (GC, group A), Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply, group B), AdheSe (Ivoclar Vivadent, group C), Xeno III (Dent- sply, group D), Clearfil SE Bond (Kura- ray, group E). At the Department of In- dustrial Chemistry and Materials Engi- neering of Messina University, five adhesives systems have been tested for the measurement of wettability angle. We have taken a small drop of each adhesive by a syringe generally used for insulin, and the small drop has fal- len on a support realized in polimetil- methacrylate connected to a telecame- ra able to realize a stop image recorded to the computer. 10 measurements ha- ve been realized on each adhesive sy- stem, of which we have calculated the average of values. The same micro dro- ps have fallen on small cavities reali- zed on not decayed teeth extracted for advanced periodontal pathology. Results: the adhesive system Prime & Bond, the only one not self etching among the five tested products, shows constantly a wettability angle smaller than the other angles, with average va- lue of 27°.71 ± 1.56. The G-Bond shows an average angle of 31°.42 ± 2.65. The Clearfil SE Bond shows an angle of 37°.22 ± 2.63. The AdheSe shows an angle 42°.22 ± 1.82. The Xe- no III shows an angle of 45°.93 ± 2.71. The images realized on the extracted teeth confirm positively these results. Conclusions: nowadays a lot of self et- ching adhesive systems have been in- troduced in trade, in order to simplify further operative procedures, to reduce the number of steps and to save time to Clinic, to avoid a lot of limits of to- tal etching systems. However, they ha- ve already raised significant doubts about the quality of smear layer crea- ted and the real adhesive capacity. Our data confirm the persistent topicality of not self etching adhesives, where the prototype guarantees smaller wet- tability angles than more diffused self etching products.
