The results of a phytogeographical and cytotaxonomical study on the species belonging to the genus Epipactis are presented. On the base of literature and personal data, taxa occurring in Sicily are: Epipactis helleborine (L.) Cranz, E. meridionalis H. Baumann & R. Lorenz, E. microphylla (Ehrh.) Swartz, E. palustris (L.) Cranz, E. placentina Bongiorni & Grünanger, E. schubertiorum Bartolo, Pulvirenti & Robatsch. These taxa are mainly mesophytes units, growing in underwood. From the phytogeographic point of view the widespread E. helleborine, E. palustris and E. microphylla show a cromosome number 2n = 40, while E. meridionalis, E. placentina, E. schubertiorum, quite rare in Sicily, have a cromosome number 2n = 38.
