The story is set between the Middle and Modern Ages and the movie shows all the ambiguities of transitory periods: Gostanza is defeated without being burned at the stake. The essay employs the idea of 'alterity' as a key to the understanding of the different problematic levels, especially the relationship between institutional and charismatic power, between men and women, between strong and spoiled identities.
