Constructed wetland is a suitable technologymainly diffused for treating wastewater comingfrom small and medium municipalities and from decentralizedsettlements (holiday resorts, shopping centers)where high variability in wastewater flow and qualityoccurs. In addition they are increasingly used to treatagricultural and animal wastewater, landfill lecheates,industrial wastewater, runoff. The paper presents thefeatures of the different phytoremediation systems,the role of the vegetation and the characteristics of themost interesting species. Examples of some systemsinstalled in Southern and Northern Italy are here presented.In particular a constructed wetland for wastewatertreatment of IKEA store in Catania allowed toobtain water always satisfacting the limits imposed bythe Italian Legislation to discharge the wastewater insurface water bodies. Similarly, satisfactory performancewas obtained also by floating wetland systemsinstalled in different locations of North Italy.
