In order to analyse the effect of shade levels on growth and quality of Ficus benjamina L. (cv. 'Danielle'), pot plants were grown for seven month under 50, 70 and 90% shade; 70% level is similar to that usually adopted in commercial nurseries. Shade level significantly affected plant response. The highest reduction of light both lowered net photosynthesis and daily dry matter production; in addition modified plant characteristics almost by enhancing plant height and total and unit leaf area. Net photosynthesis rate, detected during the last month of the growing period, was reduced with increased shading, hence the lowering of radiation (from 800 to 300 μmol m-2 s -1); nevertheless, under low PAR conditions (140 μmol m -2 s-1), the net photosynthesis was promoted in plants grown under higher shade level.
