Storia e letteratura. Catania, il fascismo e la guerra nel racconto di Sebastiano Addamo

This contribution takes up the comparison between history and literature and, depart-ing from the impasse of the polemics between "truth" and "fiction", shifts the ground to the rep-resentation models used by both disciplines, each with its own specific modalities: the first, todelineate the reality of the past, the second to delineate the 'coherence' and the 'effectiveness'of fiction that on another level wants to create knowledge about the society it represents. Theliterary text chosen as a case study is a 1974 novel / essay by Sebastiano Addamo, Il giudiziodella sera, reissued in 2008. The work takes place in Catania during the Second World Warand offers interesting methodological clues for historians (not just contemporary) thanks to thecomplexity of the models that portray the city as a "system" placed in tension and overwhelmedby the war.

Questo contributo riprende il confronto tra storia e letteratura e, per uscire dall’im-passe delle polemiche tra ‘verità’ e ‘finzione’, sposta il terreno sui modelli di rappresentazioneutilizzati da entrambe le discipline, ciascuna con proprie e specifiche modalità: la prima, perdelineare la realtà del passato, la seconda per delineare la ‘coerenza’ e l’efficacia’ di unafinzione che su un altro livello vuol comunque produrre un sapere sulla società che rappresenta.Il testo letterario prescelto come caso studio è un romanzo/saggio del 1974 (riedito nel 2008) diSebastiano Addamo, Il giudizio della sera, che rappresenta Catania negli anni della secondaguerra mondiale. Il racconto offre indicazioni metodologiche interessanti per gli storici (non solocontemporaneisti) grazie alla complessità dei modelli che leggono la città come un ‘sistema’messo in tensione e poi travolto dalla crisi bellica.
