The paper examines the Latin terms rota, strophus and machina, which occur in the passage describing the treatment to reduce the dislocation of a horse’s shoulder in § 583 of the Mulomedicina Chironis (the term rota is also used in Pelagon. 44, 3 and Veg. mulom. 2, 45, 7 and 2, 46; in the last passage we also find mac(h)ina). After presenting the somewhat divergent opinions of modern scholars, the paper goes on to analyse similar treatments in Greek authors and their continuations in medieval Latin and romance treatises. This research has shown in particular how an inspection of the iconography of some of the manuscripts transmitting these texts, together with an examination of equivalent techniques still used in modern veterinary medicine, can contribute significantly towards solving the problems of interpretation in the passage of the Mulomedicina Chironis.
