Strategie matrimoniali tra Italia e Gallia in età ostrogota

The aim of this article is to outline a general framework of the marriage alliances between the Ostrogoths and the other barbarian powers of Early Medieval western Europe. Starting from the reign of Theoderic the Great and ending with that of Totila, the dynastic ties between the Ostrogoths and the Franks are analysed in the context of the political and military framework of Italy and Gaul between the 5th and 6th centuries. Despite the dense diplomatic network created in particular by Theoderic, the two peoples did not establish such stable relations that they did not collapse under the pressure of the continuous military upheavals that affected Italy and Gaul during the first half of the 6th century.

Questo articolo ha lo scopo di delineare un quadro generale delle alleanze matrimoniali tra gli Ostrogoti con le altre potenze barbariche dell’Europa occidentale altomedievale. Si analizzano, a partire dal regno di Teoderico il Grande e sino a quello di Totila, i legami dinastici tra Ostrogoti e Franchi nel contesto del quadro politico e militare dell’Italia e della Gallia tra i secoli V e VI, evidenziando come tra i due popoli, nonostante la fitta rete diplomatica creata in particolare da Teoderico, non si crearono dei rapporti così stabili da non cedere sotto la pressione dei continui stavolgimenti militari che interessarono l’Italia e la Gallia nel corso della prima metà del VI secolo.
