The Strait of Messina as a “Border” Area in the Early Medieval Mediterranean: Three Case Studies

The paper focuses three case studies about the Strait of Messina. This crucial area is the subject of several historical reconstructions concerning some specific events which played a significant role in the within a chronological span that extends from the fifth century to the ninth. From the sack of Rome to the legendary journey in Sicily of Charlemagne, the analysis of different sources, as the Historiae adversus paganos of Orosius or the Pantheon of Godfrey of Viterbo for example, allows to understand how the Strait of Messina had maintained its multiple symbolic value as a fundamental meeting place between the different political and religious entities that animated the Mare nostrum

L'articolo esamina tre casi di studio riguardanti lo Stretto di Messina. Quest'area cruciale è oggetto di diverse ricostruzioni storiche riguardanti specifici avvenimenti che hanno giocato un ruolo significativo all'interno di un arco cronologico che si estende dal V secolo sino al IX. Dal sacco di Roma al leggendario viaggio in Sicilia di Carlo Magno, l'analisi di diverse fonti, le Historiae adversus paganos di Orosio o il Pantheon di Goffredo di Viterbo per esempio, permette di comprendere come lo Stretto di Messina abbia mantenuto il suo molteplice valore simbolico quale fondamentale luogo di incontro tra le diverse entità politiche e religiose che animavano il Mare nostrum
