The contribution intends to problematise the transversal dimension of lifelong learning, making explicit the training component, incorporated in the processes of delivery and evaluation of third mission activities, for the improvement of universities' performance. The role of the RUIAP is valorised for its function of "push" towards transformative learning processes for the universities. The dimension of a continuous laboratory for the development of a culture within the universities capable of reading the lifelong learning needs of society is intertwined with the development of the culture of quality and organisational culture, identifying the Third Mission as the reference framework that allows a series of activities and projects to be given significance. The evaluation component can, in this sense, be configured as an "educational" action capable of inducing a change in the capacities of universities to respond to the challenges of lifelong learning.
