This study investigates the mixotrophic growth of Tetraselmis chuii in second cheese whey (SCW)-based media enriched with lactose. Cultures were grown with 2%, 3.5%, and 5% lactose, as well as glucose/galactose controls, under standard light and temperature conditions. The L3.5% condition showed the highest biomass and protein productivity, with values up to 1.84- and 2.09-fold higher than autotrophic controls, respectively. These findings demonstrate the strong potential of T. chuii for bioremediation and biomass production in dairy waste-based media.

Abstract

This study investigates the mixotrophic growth of Tetraselmis chuii in second cheese whey (SCW)-based media enriched with lactose. Cultures were grown with 2%, 3.5%, and 5% lactose, as well as glucose/galactose controls, under standard light and temperature conditions. The L3.5% condition showed the highest biomass and protein productivity, with values up to 1.84- and 2.09-fold higher than autotrophic controls, respectively. These findings demonstrate the strong potential of T. chuii for bioremediation and biomass production in dairy waste-based media.
