The Emperor and his Bishops: the Testimony of the Gesta Karoli Magni imperatoris by Notker the Stammerer

The Gesta Karoli Magni imperatoris by Notker the Stammerer (c. 840-912) describes in more than one significant passage the vices and misdeeds of various bishops of Charlemagne's time. The author's interest in highlighting the dark side of the Carolingian clergy is linked to the original purpose of his work, which was to serve as a speculum principum for Charles the Fat (881-888). However, the changing situation at the emperor's court did not allow Notker to achieve the aim he had set himself in writing the Gesta, namely to demonstrate the need for Charles the Fat to rein in his episcopi, as his illustrious predecessor had done.

I Gesta Karoli Magni imperatoris di Notkero Balbulo (ca. 840-912) tratteggiano, in più di un significativo brano, i vizi e le malefatte di diverse figure di vescovi dell’età di Carlo Magno. L’interesse dell’autore nel porre in evidenza il lato oscuro del clero carolingio è legato alla finalità originaria della sua opera, ossia quella di fungere da speculum principum per Carlo il Grosso (881-888). Il mutare della situazione alla corte dell’imperatore non permise però a Notkero di raggiungere lo scopo che si era prefissato con la stesura dei Gesta, ossia quello di porre in evidenza la necessità per Carlo il Grosso di tenere a freno i propri episcopi, così come aveva saputo fare il suo illustre predecessore.
